COMPASSION

From ‘Portrait Of A City Hospital’ a photo essay about health care in America made at Denver General in 1995.

I spent 3 months working on this project sleeping many a night on a gurney.  It was quite an experience and an eye-opener. Within the doors of a city hospital the gamut of life’s emotions unfolds every day, revealing our frailty as humans when we are vulnerable and in need, regardless of our colour, race or creed.  It is hard not to admire and be moved by the dedication of all that work in such institutions.

Although made 24 years ago, health care continues to be a major issue in America and, as we move toward Presidential election time, it is once more prime on the political menu.

Made possible through C.L. Harmer at Denver General and a Fellowship from the Colorado Council on the Arts.
