Story 21

SOFIA

From the photo essay Dance.  Shot at El Prado (The Meadow), a wonderful hole in the wall in East Los Angeles, Sofia was one of the dance hostesses where, on a Sunday afternoon, local Hispanic men would gather to dance, play pool, drink and have social time whilst they were away from family and home.  Like so many stories, after a while, they take on a life of their own and my photo-essay on dance turned out to be a story about El Prado and some of the great characters who frequented the place. I will post some more images from El Prado during the year.

Since this photograph was made in 2001, this ‘Meadow’ no longer exists.  Much of the area including the old Projects has given way to gentrification.
