Taking Flowers to the Palace

Major world events leave an imprint on your mind and you will always remember where you were at the time.  Kennedy’s assassination, man’s landing on the moon.  For me, as a child, it was the 1958 Busby Babe Munich plane crash that killed so many of the Manchester United football team.

And then there was August 31st, 1997 – the untimely death in a car crash of Princess Diana.  I was in London at the time – everywhere you went you would see people carrying bouquets of flowers, taking them to Buckingham Palace.  Outside the palace, it looked so incongruous, a sea of colour and rows of genuinely grieving people with somber faces.  Carried by the mood of the crowd, it was easy to cry for someone you had never met.
